Happiness

D and I have been getting fairly serious, talking about the possibility of someday having children and perhaps even getting married. Neither of us has ever been too into the idea of marriage before, but it's starting to sound like it's not the worst idea. We're a bit young, neither of us has been married before, we're probably both a bit naive on the subject, as this article suggests.

When I was a young girl, I never imagined my dream wedding to some prince or knight kinda guy. I just imagined that one day I would be older (think 30-40) and I'd be happy. I'd be independent and have my life all figured out, with a normal job that I enjoy going to everyday simply because I'm rewarded with a paycheck. Maybe my dreams were lower than most, less ambitious than some. Basically, I just wanted to someday feel as though I have a normal, stable life that keeps me happy mostly for its simplicity. I just dreamed of happiness.

The problem I face now, is figuring out how to achieve that happiness. I'm in my early twenties and I still have no idea what I want to do with my life. I spent a year and a half in college only to quit going partly because I didn't really have the funds (and I wasn't comfortable getting myself a student loan) and partly because I had no idea what the hell I was even going to classes for everyday. My major was anthropology, and although it's definitely a passion of mine, it just doesn't seem lucrative. I believe my dream of happiness I've had since I was a kid relies on me having a job in an industry that supplies plenty of stability. (Too bad healthcare scares the hell out of me, it's probably the most stable industry around.)

Sometimes it makes me feel lost, but perhaps I'm just placing too much pressure on myself. I am sick, though, of working retail sales jobs that seem so dead-end. With the paychecks I earn from this, I feel like I'm not able to put away enough money to ever even work on my dreams... and so they seem further off than ever.

D and I didn't do a damn thing for New Years. Happy 2009 though. I was hoping to go out and explore Buffalo or spend some time meeting his old friends (since D is from the area), but we stayed in! Oh well.

D has been talking to me quite a lot about New Years Resolutions and he's given me five or six different things to work on this year. Ha! Actually, he does make several good points on what he's sort of asking me to do. Now, getting to that:
1. Write more. (Guess that's why I'm blogging again, at least for today.) I somewhat have an interest in writing, whether professionally or just for my personal benefit. In person I'm rather quirky and fun, but I keep trying to make myself write in a more serious tone (which is what this nonsense seems to be also) and I don't know that it works out. So, I guess I should write (offline in a journal?) and find my own writing voice. No use pushing myself to fit into some serious mold, yeah?
2. Stick to that Gluten-free diet I'm supposed to be on. Celiac disease is uncomfortable and can lead to even worse health conditions if gluten continues to be ingested. Kinda blows to give up bread and such, but I guess I can deal. Except earlier at the mall when D ordered an awesome sandwich at Subway and I had to eat a damn salad.. Not cool.
3. Take my vitamin everyday. If I miss a few days, one of my eyelids starts twitching randomly and constantly, and I feel like an idiot if I'm talking to someone and it happens.
...I actually forget the rest of them for now. I'm sure D will remind me! :)

I've been playing way too much Neopets lately. My account is nearly eight years old, so I have all sorts of NP and sweet items and whatever else that I don't want to go to waste by quitting the game.

Also.. our roommate owns Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility. I'm playing the hell out of that game the past few days! I had A Wonderful Life for Gamecube, but this one's way better. Back to that in a few minutes, probably...

I am such an awful blogger. I definitely have a habit of starting a new blog with every intention of actually keeping up with it (for once) and then life gets in the way, or I temporarily run out of interest in it or the inspiration to write anything at all.. or well, any other number of reasons probably.

Anyway, moving on. I've moved! Just three days ago, I moved to my new home with my boyfriend and a roommate (one of my boyfriend's friends) and we're still getting adjusted. My boyfriend, D is what I'll call him, and I went out looking for jobs today in our new city. We're up in Niagara Falls. I come from Dallas, so it's a big change in environment (especially with the snow!).

D and I drove up to Rochester from Dallas, which took two days to complete since we stayed at a hotel for a night. I actually started freaking out a bit when I saw just how much snow was on the ground while we were on the road. It barely snows where I come from, and I've only ever traveled to northern US states during the summer so I've never seen so much of the damn stuff. It's a bit overwhelming, and I suppose while I was crying over it, that kinda meant that I was realizing just how much of a change I was going to have to deal with once arriving in New York.

Ah, well. I'll get used to it. It's going to take some time. Before D and I came to Niagara Falls, we spent a week at his parents' home for the holidays. In the week and a half I've been up in New York, I've driven my car twice - and neither of those times were when the ground was covered in snow. D does most of the driving, and he's supposed to teach me at some point how to survive snow driving, but it hasn't happened yet.

Bigger move than last time..

First, I was supposed to move to the country - not too far from where I live now, which is where I've spent my whole life. I'm a city girl, it seemed like an odd change for me.
Now, the plan is my boyfriend and I move up to where he's from - Rochester, New York. I like the idea. I'm looking for a change of scenery - new places, new people, new experiences..
I'm excited. And scared.
But it'll be fun...
I just need to make sure I have a ton of photos of my current city before we move on up there. I do know I'm going to miss home. I have family, friends, memories, hell - my whole life here, and I'll miss some things.

The big step now is saving for it and making sure I tie up any loose ends I have here.

Sims 2 Halloween

Today I ended up at the Sims 2 website, noticing they have this Halloween Showcase 2008 contest going on. I've never tried to make sims or clothing or furniture or, well, much of anything Sims-related, so I won't be entering - but I did enjoy viewing the entries.

I've been playing The Sims since the day the original Sims game was released, and bought Sims 2 on its release date as well. At this point, in the only neighborhood I play - Pleasantview in Sims 2 - I have around 400 sims. I know, it's ridiculous!

So anyway, I'm kind of in the Halloween spirit but I don't celebrate holidays much, so I'm planning this silly Halloween party at one of my sim's houses. :) I just kinda got inspired by the entries, especially the stories - maybe I'll post something on the website.

Decorate A Castle

My boyfriend and I bought one of those Halloween castle kits from Walmart, and this is the result:

There's a silly amount of icing in each of the corners to keep the walls together, and the kit came with so much candy and icing that we may have overdone it just a bit - but it's going to taste better that way so it's no trouble. :) My boyfriend took the black icing, while I worked with the orange. Obviously we're amateurs, but this was a fun way to spend an hour or two.

Okay. I know. The shoes Victoria's wearing here are ridiculous. Yet, for some I suppose odd reason, I kind of like them. I can somewhat appreciate that Posh is either brave or crazy enough to actually purchase these and wear them outside of her home.

So, for that reason, they're kind of appealing. Although I would never walk in them nor would I ever even try, and in fact they're tremendously stupid.. but still. I guess.

Ugh, couldn't take the old layout anymore. I like this new, simple one way better. :)

Since I've started watching True Blood on HBO, I figured I'd go ahead and read the series by Charlaine Harris, especially considering I know someone who owns all of the books. They're actually really good. Well-written, and way better than I expected. The television series had me thinking the books were going to be excessively laced with sex, but that's not the case - apparently the storyline has just been sexed up a bit for HBO's pleasure. Not my favorite approach, but I'll deal.

Also, state fair next week! My boyfriend and I are going either Tuesday or Wednesday, and I'm quite definitely looking forward to it. Cotton candy, funnel cake, exhibits, pig racing, parade and a light show.. how exciting! Well, sort of. I've only gone about every year since I was little.

I watched Factory Girl last night just because it came on tv and I sort of like Sienna Miller. I've barely seen her act, but I do enjoy the crazy outfits she leaves her house in. Didn't care for the movie much, though.

I created an account at 43 Things just a few days ago, and made it a point to finish this goal the same night I read it. Bad video games!

Okay, maybe I'll finally learn my lesson. Or admit I have a problem. Or whatever. This morning I woke up, already kinda groggy feeling, and immediately went to the kitchen to brew coffee. Three cups later, I'm not feeling at all better. I don't really feel more awake, in fact a nap sounds pretty good right about now. Damn coffee! Everything's better in moderation, right? Right.

In other news, I'm seriously in love with my boyfriend. He does, however, spend so much time on that damn game Spore that he ends up ignoring me. For the past week, I've taken second place to a video game. I realize it's cool and you can create your own race from a single cell, awarding them with the power to destroy all other races and eventually take over planets.. yeah, but I'm his girlfriend. I at least deserve a few minutes or an hour or something out of his day where he could pay attention to me instead of the plundering and whatever he does in his virtual reality.

I'm a gamer, so I do get it. I understand that when you buy a new game it can have the ability (if it's that good) to take over your life a bit, and eventually you come down off of it and make your way back into reality. It's just obnoxious when he's sitting next to me on his computer, or I get up and do something and he's still on the computer, and at some point I'm trying to chat with him and he's too distracted, but then later he wants to show me his newest creation and I'm supposed to believe it's amazing.

SPORE RUINS LIVES.

Okay, maybe that's a bit dramatic just blaming Spore. Video games, or anything else that's borderline obsession.. that kind of stuff can temporarily "ruin" lives, or make a life feel like it's on hold, or someone else feel like they never get any attention (hey, I'm like anyone else - I really do enjoy attention every now and then). I just can't wait until he gets over this whole "I have a new awesome video game" phase thing. I will admit though, that his creatures are cute and they do keep getting more adorable.

A big move

In about a month, I’m supposed to move to the country. That’s kind of weird for me, I’ve always been a city girl. I grew up here, in the city of Dallas.. and now, I’m supposed to move to the outskirts of the metroplex to somewhere I’ve only visited once - to see the home we’re apparently moving into. I’m almost completely unfamiliar with a country lifestyle, the lack of street lights and one-lane curvy country roads actually freak me out a little. It’s probably going to be culture shock, and definitely will take some getting used to.

Maybe I’m some kind of spoiled city girl, but I’m so used to driving just a few minutes in any direction to find what I’m looking for - for example, there are three Target stores within half an hour of where I live. It’s not going to be like that when I’m 20 minutes from the closest suburb. Weird!

Who knows, maybe I’ll end up loving it?

On the subject of my sweetheart, we’ve begun canvassing! It’s a little weird, going door to door asking people to support a non-profit organization and contribute what they can (along with letter writing) but I’ve only been doing it a few days and definitely improving.

Making a difference by organizing my community is a pretty sweet way to spend my days.

It was especially inspiring that he had no speech prepared, he mentioned that he just speaks about what’s on his mind.

Planet Green

My boyfriend and I are seriously enjoying this channel. With shows like Renovation Nation and Emeril Green, we’re finding out lots of new ecofriendly information! We’re already very much into the environment and are knowledgeable about different projects and organizations geared toward saving the environment, but it’s nice to hear about new ideas. Improving the earth, even one small step at a time, is pretty sweet. :)

This was just in a Daily Candy email article, but I figured I’d make note of it by posting a blog (It would get lost forever in my browser bookmarks). There’s a company, Your Slip Is Showing, that makes the sweetest and sexiest slips that are meant to show beneath your skirt or dress.

I’ve been wanting something like this, but hadn’t really thought to look for it, so I was glad to see someone had already thought of and created cute slips that are meant to be shown. Too bad they’re so expensive, I have other things to save for.

I’ve been distracted from my supposed crafty needs by World of Warcraft battlegrounds. I have a poorly geared 70 who could really use several more hours of my dedicated nerd time in order to measure up to some of the Alliance I’ve been coming up against. Maybe it’s good that players exist who are bigger nerds than me?

Well, besides, you know.. real life things. Like excessive cleaning because I’m kinda stressed and bored - I’m figuring a lot of that is caused by not having a second job, and that my first job doesn’t pay too badly but doesn’t require many working hours either.

Plus I spend a lot of time organizing magazine tear-outs of inspirational fashiony stuff so next time I go shopping (read: have extra money to spend) I buy things that are more bold and daring since currently I wear a lot of neutrals.

I’m a huge tennis fan. Today, Rafael Nadal is officially #1 in the world.

He’s been my favorite player for years, and I’ve been waiting for him to finally take over the #1 spot.. and he did! He’s won the last three French Open finals (which is on clay), and this year he was finally able to beat Roger Federer on grass at Wimbledon. Plus, he won a gold medal at the olympics on Sunday!

The second I remembered what day it is (which I’ve been looking forward to, the day Rafa takes the number one ranking), I ran to my computer and opened the official ATP site, glad to see they’d already changed everything (at probably 2:00 am) to congratulate Nadal. Woo!

I’m busy lately. That’s not going to change much since I just resubscribed to World of Warcraft, I haven’t played in a few weeks since I cancelled it. Ah, well. I hit 70 I think earlier this month and stopped playing. Sometimes life gets in the way of being the big gamer that I’ve always been.

Lately I’m feeling bored. I’m feeling like I work, when I’m not I play my silly video games.. and of course I have other fun, but without any real creative outlet. Suddenly I want to view the world in different colors than I’m used to, in more exciting and brighter, flashier ways. I used to try to craft. Perhaps I should try it again.

I find myself wanting to draw, paint, sew, mold ridiculous things with clay.. And so begins the research. I’m not really the type of person to just jump into something without thinking it through - unless it’s now or never, one in a lifetime.. then I’ll probably go for it - but releasing my inner creative, childlike self isn’t like that.

Everyone has some sort of creative talent within them, I believe.. but I often am too critical of my personal work or take it as only a joke and my artist aspirations never go anywhere. Maybe it’s time to change all that. I guess I’ll just have to see how this goes..
